Brighton and Hove carbon footprint

Last Updated on September 2, 2024

While the Climate Charter is primarily addressed to our elected representatives, it also includes ‘citizens’ and our commitment to change.

The Place-Based Carbon Calculator gives the overall carbon footprint for Brighton and Hove area – what we all use and consume: food and drink, consumable goods, heating and electricity, holiday flights and more. These ‘consumption emissions’ are much greater than the ‘territorial emissions’ used by the Office for National Statistics because they take into account the goods and services we buy from abroad, not just what we produce at home. In all, while ‘territorial emissions’ for Brighton are around 3.1 tons per person, ‘consumption emissions’ are over double at 8 tons per person – see below. (NB for a more detailed explanation of this difference, see Climate:Change)

The black line is where we should be

The horizontal black line represents the UK’s target footprint per person set out in the Committee on Climate Change’s 6th Carbon Budget covering 2032 to 2037. It is intended to provide an indication of how far we must go in the next ten years if we are to have any chance of reaching net-zero by 2050. Air travel forms one of the biggest carbon emitters.

Check out your neighbourhood

The Place-Based Carbon Calculator offers an interactive map with pop up information showing carbon emissions for your area. Areas marked in dark blue are most climate friendly, those in brown, the least.

Calculate your carbon footprint

This nifty little carbon calculator takes approximately five minutes to complete. It is well worth taking time to do this properly since it doesnt just give you a score, it actually offers options to reduce your carbon footprint and invites you to make one or more pledges. An email is then sent to you with a link ‘View My Climate Promises’ which you can refer back to any time. I thought I would do well but found my carbon footprint was 4.9 tons – not bad but not great. Give it a go!
